So you just received an invitation to a formal affair, maybe with the dress code specified. While it seems like having a dress code should simplify choosing your outfit, it can easily become overwhelming and confusing.
Dress codes, especially for weddings, are endless nowadays - black tie, semi formal, garden party, black tie optional, cocktail, beach and destination. All of which have very different requirements.
Our team has put together tips to give everyone a starting point to navigate all of “the rules”. Although these guidelines serve as a solid foundation, the appropriate dress code for each event can differ depending on factors such as the season, time of day, and location.
Consider the Event & Venue
No matter the dress code, take in consideration the event you are attending. A church wedding may require your shoulders to be covered, opposed to a cocktail party where you need to have your arms free for movement.
Consider Color & Length
When choosing color and length, the event, season, and dress code will all play a factor. Pastels are not encouraged for a Holiday party and we all know, even if some chose to ignore it, that white/cream and red should not be worn to a wedding unless otherwise specified. Although some dress codes may specify a specific length, it is never a good idea to wear a dress too short or revealing.
Consider the Fabric
When picking out the perfect thing to wear we always suggest thinking of the occasion and how formal the event is. Fabrics like linen and cotton are very casual, so even in a long dress would not be appropriate for a black tie affair. On the other hand any length of dress that is fully sequined is not recommended for a semi formal event.
Consider your Footwear
The proper shoes are crucial for any look. Imagine trying to walk up a grass hill in stilettos…sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. We always recommend considering the venue before making a shoe selection.
Consider Tailoring
This may seem like common sense, but many people don’t realize how important it is to have clothing altered. Proper alterations are the essential finishing touch; garments should be fitted properly to your body and hemmed with the shoe height in mind.
Consider your Hair & Make up
Although it may not seem like a big deal, hair and makeup can bring your entire look together. Many people think the hard part is over once they find the perfect dress and accessories for an event leaving their hair and make up as an afterthought.
